Every year, Pack 152 hosts a Pinewood Derby event. Each den brings forward one standard regulation car and races against their peers in a series of runs.

Pack 152 provides kits to scouts at a cost of $10 per kit. It is encouraged for parents to also participate. We also host two build nights at one of the pack leaders homes before the race.

Rules

Cub Scouts

All Cub Scouts are to abide by the standard pinewood derby rules. In essence, the following rules apply:

  • Cars may be up to 5 ounces
  • Cars must be standard dimensions
    • No more than 7 inches long
    • No more than 2.75 inches wide
  • Axles, wheels, and body must be from the provided kit
  • Wheel bearings, washers, and other aftermarket parts are prohibited
  • No lubricating oils (powered graphite or silicon is allowed)
  • No springs of any kind
  • Car must ride with a free wheel, no propulsion or starting mechanism
  • No loose materials on the car

Parents & Siblings

Parents, Grandparents and older siblings are encouraged to participate in the pinewood derby experience as well.

All standard rules apply to the parents and siblings division.


District Races

The Cardinal District Race will be held March 1st.

Each den is eligible to send the following to the district race:

  • Top 3 Finishers for speed
  • One participant for Best Design (non-racing)
  • One participant for Most Original (non-racing)

New this year: AOLs that race in their pack’s derby, and subsequently cross over to a troop are elibile to participate in the district derby.
